Waiting for the endgame

Sclerotic thinking reflects the mental silos of a few. In New Delhi the recent strategic dialogue between Pakistan and the United States is an effort by Washington to coax Islamabad to play its part in the Afghan theatre. The US needs Pakistan’s help to stabilise Afghanistan even as it seeks a rapidfire exit from a region that has always been a nightmare. Pakistan, clever minion that it is knows this is the perfect time to extract its pound of flesh from the...

Judicial crisis in Azad Kashmir: the real story

Chief Justice Choudhry Riaz Akhtar may not be the right person to be Chief Justice of Pakistani Administered Kashmir; he may be corrupt too, but is he the only public office holder who is alleged to be corrupt in AJK and in Pakistan. If he is corrupt and inappropriate person for this post then responsibility lies with those who appointed him.The present Muslim Conference government is after blood of Chief Justice Choudhry Riaz Akhtar, yet it was the Muslim Conference government which...

Census and its authenticity

Similar statements were issued by Sheikh Abdulla and Farooq Abdulla in eighties. An allegation of manipulation of census figures is an issue over which pro India and separatist parties have similar views. Quit Jammu and Kashmir Movement was apparently conceived during Amarnath land row agitation (2008). Shopian double rape and murder case (2009) and its mismanagement provided Hurriyat Conference (G) an avenue of experimenting it. The plan was executed in 2010. In terms of its intensity it surpassed Quit Kashmir Movement of 1946 and Quit India Movement of 1942.

Manmohan Singh on Kashmir: A package without content

After two months of bloodshed and mass mobilisation, Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh finally uttered few words on Kashmir. One wonders why it took so long for Indian PM to express his views on Kashmir despite the fact that the mobilization in Kashmir had reached to such an extent that mobs were targeting everything that symbolized Indian state in every nook and corner of the valley.

Kashmir resistance between 9/11 and 2011

Ever since Jammu and Kashmir State was annexed to India, Kashmiris continue to dispute legitimacy of this relation and perceive it to be a bond of subjugation. The modes of resistance assumed different forms during changing times. From 1947 to 1953, Political Conference of Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Karra initiated it. The resistance at this juncture remained confined to pasting of posters and raising of slogans by students of S.P. College. Even these modes of resistance invoked harsh...
