NC: agencies behind Hurriyat split

The ruling National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday claimed that the reported 'split' in Hurriyat Conference headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq ‘is the creation of Indian agencies and attempts are being made to weaken the on-going movement in Kashmir’.

“Ram Jeth Malani divided Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz and now we have the agencies in our country that are hell-bent in dividing the separatists further so that the on-going movement could be weakened at large,” Dr Mustafa Kamal, additional general secretary of NC, said.

After the Hurriyat's 2002 split into two factions led by Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, the section led by the Mirwaiz Monday appeared headed for another split.

Kamal, a former minister, said: the role of the Indian agencies is to create leaders here, use them and then throw them. “The agencies of India have the greater role in using the leaders at one point and then making them irrelevant at the other so that new leader could be created,” he said.

In a major development, Shabir Ahmad Shah, chairman of Democratic Freedom Party, Muhammad Nayeem Khan, chief of National Front and Azam Inqalabi, chief of Mahaz-e-Azadi, accused the Mirwaiz of "having made the conglomerate a personal fiefdom".

Kamal said the Huriyat leadership must unite for the common cause and should present one picture before the world. He remarked: the world community including Organization of Islamic Countries accepts the representative character of Huriyat and it must in unison perceive the common cause.

“There are elements from both the sides that strive to weaken the Kashmir issue for their vested interests and the leadership must not fall in their trap. Instead of fighting against each other, they must fight together for a cause,” he said.

Kamal said it is unfortunate that Huriyat leadership is getting divided on ground and the result is a chaos among the people. “They should not confuse people and the need of the hour for the leadership is to show unity,” he said.
