Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairperson of his faction of Hurriyat Conference, was placed under house arrest Monday, a day before the group has called for a march to the Eidgah here.

The Mirwaiz's movements have been restricted to maintain law and order, a police official said.

The Hurriyat group has called for a march to the martyrs' graveyard in Eidgah area to commemorate the death anniversaries of Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq (the Mirwaiz's father) and Abdul Gani Lone.

Kashmir: Teen boy killed in accidental blast

A teenage boy was killed on Monday after an explosive device he was fiddling with accidentally went off in, police said.

The blast took place at far flung village Bakerwal Khairi in Kither area of Kishtawar district, around 275 km northeast of Jammu city, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

As the commencement of  Amarnath Yatra approaches, renowned civil society member and seer Swami Agnivesh Sunday said that the environment with the onset of pilgrimage in Kashmir faces the brunt of unchecked flow of pilgrims.

“The duration of pilgrimage should be limited and there is a need to drastically curtail the number of pilgrims,” he said.

A ferocious bear mauled three girls and a five year old kid in two different incidents in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, some 22 kms from summer capital Srinagar, on Sunday.
