Thousands of men, women and children Wednesday participated in the funeral procession of two Hizbul Mujahideen militants killed in a gunfight with government forces in North Kashmir. Abid Nabi shows you some frames.
Aqib Rashid Sofi and Bilal Ahmad from Palhallan were killed in a gunfight inside a school building in Goshbugh village of Pattan area late on Tuesday evening.
A large number of women were part of the funeral procession in the restive village that earned the name 'Gaza of Kashmir' during civil protests in 2010.
Women were chanting pro-freedom slogans. Some were singing lullabies to the slain militants.
The militants were showered with flower petals and sweets while they were taken for burial.
Police sources say both had joined militancy recently and were locally trained.
The news of their killing was met with grief in Palhalan. Agitated youth staged a protest and shouted pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.
The bodies were not handed over to their families late in the night.
The forces had cordoned off a school building, where the two militants were hiding, after receiving a specific tip off.
Police sources say that many youth have taken to gun after civil protests in 2010.
A large number of children also participated in the funeral procession.
The funeral prayer was offered at Eidgah of the village and were buried at a 'Martyrs' graveyard.
