At least 13 people were shot and killed in a shooting in Chicago on Monday night, police said.

According to Chicago Police Superintendent David O’Neill Brown, it happened around 9:30 p.m. as a crowd gathered at the corner of California Avenue and Polk Street.

One person was also hit by a car at the scene, Brown said at the press conference.

Police earlier said 14 people had been shot, but changed the number to 13 in a statement early Tuesday.

The victims included children, including a 3-year-old boy, an 11-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy, according to a police report.

The superintendent said the injured were taken to several area hospitals, ranging from life-threatening to critical.

A group of people were gathering on the corner for a vigil when the shooting happened, Brown said.

“Other people may be gathering for a variety of other reasons, Brown added. “It’s, you know, a common corner where people gather and have different meetings and gatherings.”

Two men in a dark SUV opened fire on people on the corner and then drove off, police said in a statement.

Investigators obtained video of the scene, which showed the shooting happened within seconds, according to Brown.

He encouraged anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact law enforcement or leave an anonymous tip. CPD tips.
