Pelosi visited Taiwan earlier this week, a highly controversial move. China considers the island part of its territory, but Taiwan has been governed independently since 1949, according to the Council on Foreign Relations.
China has repeatedly voiced its opposition to Pelosi’s trip to the disputed island, but the US official has decided not to cancel her plans.
“Despite China’s grave concerns and determined opposition, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi insisted on China’s visit to the Taiwan region. This is gross interference in China’s internal affairs. It seriously undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “In response to Pelosi’s egregious provocation, China decides to adopt sanctions against Pelosi and her immediate family members in accordance with relevant laws of the People’s Republic of China,” they added.
The report did not provide specific details on the nature of the sanctions.
Political analysts have warned that Pelosi’s decision to visit Taiwan could be US-China tensions are fueling. The relationship has been strained over the years by issues such as Taiwan, the global economy and Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.

In another show of Beijing’s anger over Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, China’s military is conducting its largest military exercises near the island.
Taiwanese security officials called the drills “very provocative” and said they were monitoring the moves.
