UPDATE: Suspects identified in shooting, 2 Cobb County deputies killed – WSB-TV Channel 2

COBB COUNTY, Ga. – Two deputies with the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office were shot and killed Thursday evening, Sheriff Craig D. Owens said.

Owens said deputies served a warrant during their ambush Thursday night.

Cobb County coroner’s officials on Friday identified the shooters as Christopher Cook and Christopher Golden. Both are expected to appear in court at 4 p.m

The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office and the Cobb County Police Department will hold a joint press conference immediately following the first appearance.

The names of the slain deputies have not been released.

“All I can tell you at this point is — simply put, two of my deputies were ambushed and killed this evening,” Owens said. “The two suspects we believe are responsible for this crime are currently in custody and are being held at the Cobb County Police Department for questioning.”

Golden has been charged with three counts of murder and three counts of aggravated assault on an officer.

No additional charges have yet been filed against Cook.

Deputies got out of their cars and began talking to the suspects before taking the ambush. One suspect fired shots from a car and a second suspect fired shots from a home, the sheriff’s office said.

The two deputies, Owens said, had been with the sheriff’s office for more than five years.

A Channel 2 Action News crew saw multiple jurisdictions respond to the home where deputies were ambushed. Channel 2 crews were also outside Wellstar Kennestone Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital, where the delegation was taken.

The suspects were arrested around 12:15 a.m. hours after SWAT teams responded.

Owens said he had no words to express his emotions, but asked for prayers for his deputies.

“Two wives lost their wonderful husbands,” Owens said. “Pray for us because we need it. Our hearts are broken in Cobb County.

Channel 2’s Kristen Holloway spoke with neighbor Tiffany, who was stranded outside the neighborhood as the situation unfolded. However, he said the neighborhood is devastated by the loss of the two officers.

“We’re all heartbroken and very sad for the neighborhood because they were here, (the officers) were here to protect us, they were doing their job,” he said. “We are heartbroken for the families.”

Channel 2 Action News Cook, who lives at the home on Hampton Glen Court where the shooting happened, has obtained a booking report.
